Bringing the Next Generation of E-Commerce payment gateway to life

Client: ProCredit Bank Kosovo

Region: Southeastern Europe

About the Project

With the retirement of the original 3-D Secure (3DS) protocol in 2022, the payment industry turned to EMV 3DS versions 2.1.0 and 2.2.0 for a more secure, seamless online transaction experience. At Quipu, we embraced this evolution by implementing the New Generation of E-Commerce Payment Gateway.

This new solution not only complies with EMV 3DS 2.2.0 standards but also ensures future readiness. Designed to align with regulations like PSD2, it incorporates advanced features such as non-payment authentications (NPAs), PSD2 exemptions for strong customer authentication (SCA), and 3DS Requestor-Initiated Payments (3RI). It’s a game-changer for banks and merchants, delivering enhanced security and a smoother user experience.

Services provided: New Generation of e-Commerce Payment Gateway

Market impact:

The rise of mobile payments has redefined how consumers shop, with 80% of shoppers using their smartphones to browse even in physical stores. The New Generation of E-Commerce Payment Gateway taps into this trend by offering:

  • Smoother digital payment experiences: PSD2 exemptions reduce transaction friction, improving merchant conversion rates.
  • Versatile use cases: Features like NPAs (e.g., adding cards to digital wallets) and 3RI Payments (e.g., subscription services) cater to modern user behaviors.
  • Stronger customer trust: Advanced security ensures compliance and protects sensitive data, making online transactions safer for everyone.

Challenges:

This project has been one of the most challenging ones accomplished in the last few years, with complexities across multiple aspects and stages:

  • Designing an architecture and integrating technologies that could support advanced functionalities.
  • Completing certification processes with both Visa and Mastercard.
  • Meeting Mastercard’s strict mandate to migrate banks and merchants to EMV 3DS 2.2.0 by July 31, 2024.

Balancing these technical and timing complexities while ensuring a high-quality migration was no small feat.

Our approach:

To deliver the New Generation of E-Commerce Payment Gateway, we focused on compliance, simplicity, and efficiency:

Ensuring full compliance: We designed the solution to meet all EMV 3DS 2.2.0 requirements, including advanced features like non-payment authentications (NPAs) and PSD2 exemptions, ensuring regulatory alignment and improved usability.

Seamless merchant migration: We simplified the migration process for merchants, requiring only a single URL update and access to the new Merchant Portal. This minimized disruptions and ensured a smooth transition.

Meeting tight deadlines: Agile project management enabled us to meet Mastercard’s strict migration deadline while maintaining high-quality standards.

Future-proof design: The gateway is built to support future protocol updates, giving our clients long-term scalability and flexibility.

This strategic approach ensured a smooth, timely rollout while enhancing the payment experience for merchants and users alike.
